The Open air museum contains no less than 140.000 items from Latvia's rich past which will bring back many memories from your grandparents.. f you would like to know how life once was in Latvia then the Open Air Museum can provide you with a very good impression of the Latvia of old. Everything from windmills to churches have been moved to this preservation site on the edge of the city. The museum was founded in 1924 and is one of the oldest open-air museums in Europe. Here you can get acquainted with samples of national building tradition. Dwelling houses and other buildings of peasants, fishermen and craftsmen are collected from all districts of Latvia. Here you can also have a look at a traditional roadside inn, windmill and a country church, feeling closer to the way of life of the previous centuries. You can attend services held in the Usma church on Sundays, too. In summer, concerts of organ and folk music take place here and various craftsmen work in their shops as they did in olden times.
